Since the appointment of Jürgen Klopp in 2015, Liverpool have risen from mid-table to title challengers, but how much has the German manager altered fortunes in his 3 and a half years at the helm?
In October 2015, German manager Jürgen Klopp took over at the Merseyside outfit with an impressive CV after orchestrating 2 Bundesliga titles in 2 seasons at his previous club.
The appointment created a “buzz” around Anfield.
“The Vibe around the club was buzzing!” said one fan.
This is something which had lacked under Previous manager Brendan Rodgers. This brought high expectations along with it.
Despite performances improving and results picking up, his side only managed 8thspot that season, tallying a total 60 points. This was 21 less than league winners Leicester.
Klopp was quick to add strength to his attack for the start of the next season after securing the transfer of Senegalese forward Sadio Mané in June 2016.
The acquisition of this player helped his side jump Four places in the table.
It led to an eventual finish of 4th after acquiring 76 points, 16 more than they managed the previous year.
During that season, Klopp had implemented his Geiger pressing football style into the side.
By the time it came to starting the new season, it had become a staple point of his Liverpool side.
The signing of Mohammed Salah, from Roma, bolstered their attacking prowess and complemented Klopp’s Geiger press.
This quickly established their front three as one of the best attacks in the world in the 2017/18 season.
He would later become known as “The Egyptian King” at Anfield.
In January, Klopp looked to close up a leaky defence and finally completed the signing of Dutch centre back Virgil Van Dijk.
Despite another 4thplace finish, Liverpool fans had seen massive improvements in that year and a champions league run that captured the fans imagination.
They fell at the final hurdle against Real Madrid.
Going into the 2018/19 season, expectations had increased.
After failure to win trophies in all of Klopp’s previous seasons, fans were calling out for league success.
Transfers of goalkeeper Allisson Becker and Naby Keita (which had been agreed the previous summer) further bolstered their squad.
Van Dijk completed his first pre-season with his new suiters. All this had Liverpool fans feeling confident about the upcoming season.
Klopp’s team stormed off the blocks going undefeated until January before their 2-1 defeat to reigning champions Manchester City.
A couple of draws followed and they slipped off of top spot. They currently sit in second a point behind leaders City.
However, results have picked up and they have won three of their last five games, conceding only two goals.
They picked up four clean sheets and are unbeaten in the league since.
Despite elimination from both the FA cup and League Cup, they remain in the Champions league after the 3-1 victory over Bayern in the round of 16 on Wednesday night.
The appointment of Jürgen Klopp has rejuvenated Liverpool.
Despite little success in what is approaching three seasons, fans have seen a steady progression.
Now it seems as though they have jumped to the next level and are very close to silverware. “Liverpool are really close, We’ve never been closer in all my life. Klopp has built an empire here we’ve become unstoppable! 1 loss all season so far! Few games remaining...” said a spokesperson from Liverpool Fans Forum.
He continued to say “There will be a Statue up for Klopp in 5 years’ time if we win the league and champions league and keep winning things. He will definitely become a club legend. He’s already a legend In my eyes for the turnaround he’s made at the club.”
Liverpool are finally starting to become a superpower in English and European football.
